5 Principles of Supported Living

The 5 principles support the goal of inclusion in all aspects of society; that means living independently in your own home or apartment out in the community with whatever supports necessary to be successful.

A Home of One's Own

Individuals should live in homes they own, lease, or rent, just like other members of their community, with control over their living environment and who they invite over

Choice and Self-Direction

Individuals should have the freedom to make their own everyday choices, plan for their futures, and direct the services they receive, including choosing agencies and staff

Relationships

Individuals should have access to and be supported in developing meaningful relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and staff, fostering a sense of belonging and connection

Community Membership

Individuals should have opportunities to participate fully in the mainstream of community life, including joining clubs, groups, churches, and using local resources and services

Flexible, Tailored Services and Supports

Services and supports should be designed to meet the unique needs of each individual, allowing for flexibility and adaptation to changing circumstances
